Going Westīorn in Oklahoma, Sam’s widowed mother moved the family to California when he was a child. Other more celebrated names may have dominated the narrative for decades, but the evolution of gaming in Las Vegas and proliferation across North America owes significantly to Sam and Bill Boyd, the father and son team that developed the business model for American casinos. That a 79-year-old Boyd would be an inductee in 1991 after founding a successful casino company which operated thousands of rooms, would be the stuff of dreams. The idea that there would even be such a thing as “The Gaming Hall of Fame” in 1928, when an 18-year-old Sam Boyd was running bingo games on a gambling ship off the Californian coast, was fanciful.
